Three Eras, Each Ended By Catastrophe
The Phanerozoic eon (541 million years ago to present) is divided into three eras: the Paleozoic ('ancient life'), the Mesozoic ('middle life'), and the Cenozoic ('recent life'). What makes this three-era structure so memorable is that each era doesn't just represent a different collection of dominant life forms — it's specifically bounded by a mass extinction event severe enough to end one era's characteristic ecosystem and open space for the next era's dominant groups to rise.
This pattern — extinction clearing ecological space, followed by a completely different group of organisms rising to dominance — is one of the most important recurring themes in the entire fossil record, and it's exactly why era boundaries in the Phanerozoic line up so closely with major extinction events.

'PAM' — Paleozoic, And, Mesozoic (then Cenozoic): a name-style mnemonic, treating the three eras like they spell out a friend's name — Paleozoic, then 'and' Mesozoic leads into Cenozoic. Paleozoic (541–252 Ma)
'Ancient life' — includes the Cambrian Explosion, the first fish, first land plants, first reptiles, and first insects. Ends with the End-Permian mass extinction, the single worst extinction event in Earth's history.
Example: nearly all major animal body plans still around today first appeared during the Paleozoic.

Mesozoic (252–66 Ma)
'Middle life' — the age of non-avian dinosaurs, alongside the first birds and the first (small) mammals, and the rise of flowering plants. Ends with the K-Pg extinction, caused by the Chicxulub asteroid impact.
Example: nearly every dinosaur most people can name by name lived during the Mesozoic.

Cenozoic (66 Ma–present)
'Recent life' — mammals rapidly diversify into ecological niches vacated by the dinosaurs, grasses evolve and spread, and eventually primates and humans appear. We are currently living in the Cenozoic.
Example: specifically, we're in the Quaternary Period and Holocene Epoch (some argue the informal 'Anthropocene') of the Cenozoic Era.

Extinction Clears the Way
Each era transition follows the same basic pattern: a catastrophic extinction event dramatically reduces the diversity and dominance of the previous era's characteristic organisms, opening ecological opportunity for a different group to rapidly diversify and dominate the following era. This is exactly why mammals — which existed in small numbers throughout the entire Mesozoic — didn't become dominant until the dinosaurs' extinction cleared the ecological stage for them at the start of the Cenozoic.

⚠️ Most Common Phanerozoic Eras Mistakes
Don't assume mammals only appeared in the Cenozoic — small mammals actually existed throughout the entire Mesozoic, but they didn't become ecologically dominant until dinosaurs went extinct at the Mesozoic-Cenozoic boundary. This distinction between 'existing' and 'dominant' is a frequent exam trap.
